Synopsis:

There is no sensation, no experience more delicious and tempting to the senses than the taste of forbidden love. The longing… The desire… The unquenched thirst for his touch. He was the man I was never supposed to love. I was supposed to hate him. I suppose part of me did and that is what made the desire so much more intense. He set a fire under my skin that burned white hot with every smoldering glance. He sets my soul ablaze, the slow burn of passion aching in every inch of my body.

Black Horse. The name haunted my dreams… But regardless of family vendettas, old hurts and contemptuous blood shed, the heart wants what it wants… and mine has a mind of its own and my mind is set on Colton McClain.

His family is known by his father’s nickname: Black Horse. Like one of the four horses flying out of the gates of hell, Tom “Black Horse” McClain ripped my world apart fifteen years ago. I was only seven when I found my mother and father dead in their beds, with Tom McClain standing over them with a blood stained butcher knife. He would have come for me, too, had my brothers not saved me. Seth, my older brother, swooped me up before I had the chance to scream and covered my mouth with his hand.

Tom McClain sought out the services of my father in a time of great need. My father, Nathan Ford, was a highly reputable criminal defense attorney, who took on Tom’s case when he was accused of murdering his wife after she was caught in bed with another man. Tom didn’t have the money to pay for my father’s services, so he took on the case pro bono because he believed in Tom’s innocence. I remember my dad meeting with Tom in his study while my mother looked after Colton, my brothers and I in the kitchen. We had become very close. My brothers once considered Colton their best friend. Not anymore.

My father got Tom off on a technicality. The prosecution had no reliable witnesses and they weren’t about to rely on the testimony of a five year old boy; Colton himself. He had witnessed the whole ordeal himself. How does Tom repay my father for his kindess and generosity? He murdered him in his sleep. He killed Daddy first. Momma screamed when she saw a man standing over her bed, and that is what woke me. In just my nightgown and socks, I tip-toed down the hall past Timmy, Randy and Seth’s bedrooms and as I entered the doorway to Momma and Daddy’s room, Tom McClain plunged a knife through my mother’s chest. My blood ran cold. I tried to scream but no sound would come out. The next thing I knew, Seth had his hand over my mouth and we hid in the hall closet. Tears streamed down my face as my arms and legs shook. I could her Tom’s boot echo against the hard wood floor of the hall.

“Sssh… Don’t say a word…” I remember Seth urging.
The air in the closet was stifling; warm and dead like a coffin. I could hear my brothers’ heavy breathing. Our dog Micah’s frantic barking from the back yard. She knew something was horribly wrong. His bootfalls were getting closer… louder… I took a deep breath and didn’t dare exhale in fear that he would hear me. Somehow, I was able to stifle my tears, but something happened that was out of my control. My throat caught from my sobbing. Tom heard it. The foot steps intensified, beating a path to the closet door. Seth, still firmly holding me, swung around so I was facing the inside of the closet. I focused on the faded floral pattern of the shelf lining that was barely visible in the dark lighting of the closet. I focused on anything but the sound of Tom McClain’s approaching footsteps. Then a loud clicking sound made it impossible. The sound of a shot gun barrel banging into place. He didn’t even bother opening the door.

Bang! Bang! Then silence.

Out of instinct I jumped into the shelf before me and cowered behind the extra blankets mother kept neatly stored on the shelf. I was stunned that I was still alive, until reality set in. Seth had slumped down against the door of the closet, unrecognizable and motionless. The shotgun blast had obliterated his once handsome face.
I am supposed to hate Colton McClain, but I can’t. When the police showed up the next day, they found Colton locked in his father’s pick-up a block away, hungry, thirsty and distraught. He was taken away by the state and put in foster care because none of his relatives wanted to have anything to do with the Black Horse name. Black Horse was caught trying to jump the border with my father’s wallet in his pocket and $10,000 in cash in a duffel bag. He traveled alone, having abandoned Colton in his truck back in Oakely. I guess his boy knew too much. When officials apprehended him, they ran my Daddy’s license and discovered that he was found murdered. Tom pleaded insanity, but after a thorough psychiatric evaluation, it was concluded that Tom McClain knew exactly what he was doing. He was sentenced to prison for twenty years, having received a lenient judge; a rarity in the State of Texas.

My surviving brothers Randy and Tim could never know about Colton and I. They’ve had it out for him for years. Bloodlines run thick around here. The sins of the fathers will forever haunt the sons, and women are to stand back and stay out of the way. Well, I have something to say about that… Fuck that, Colton McClain didn’t murder my family. His father did… and he suffered just as much as we did. Now fifteen years after the crime that screwed both of our lives up royally, Black Horse is getting out of jail. Just four days until his release. Colton wants to hide me. He said we can run… Start over somewhere else. My brothers are armed to the teeth and a war is about to break out. I have no intentions of sitting down or running away like a little girl. We cannot hide from this anymore.

Our past does not own us, and we owe it to our hearts to show the world that love can arise from the darkest of places.

Excerpt

Excerpt One
Shay strode into Rex's office after he'd turned in his truck and clocked out. They'd often shared laughs about who really was the boss, since Shay, a repairman, had a musculature and strength that dwarfed Rex. Rex might have had a more powerful executive position and higher salary, but Shay topped him in every other way—and on every occasion. Regarding himself as a bit of a tough guy, Shay looked and showed it.
"You about ready to blow this joint?" He crossed the thick-pile carpet of Rex's office and flopped into one of the chairs across from his boyfriend. "I'm thirsty, hungry, and horny, pretty much in that order and I want a cold beer, a corned beef sandwich, and you, naked under me, as quickly as possible."

Excerpt Two
I'm tired—and tired of it. Life hadn't been kind to Jagger lately and it started to take its toll. He'd been happier when he'd been on the road. He loved the feel of freedom when he rode with the wind in his face and whipping his hair. Tight, black leathers were his favorite attire for riding, combined with a white ribbed tank and his well-worn jacket. He looked as dangerous and sexy as he felt every time the black leather hugged his cock and his ass. He smiled when he recalled the reactions he'd get when men and women alike got a look at the bulge his fist-thick cock created in the skin tight leather. Of course, he didn't give a damn about the women's reactions—flattering, sure, but not my thing. Give me a sweet, pliant little bottom who shivers in anticipation over how taking me up his ass is going to split him in half with sheer pleasure. Jagger got semi-hard at the thought.

Excerpt Three
Jagger Holmes stood just over six feet tall, all attitude and pure, rock-hard muscle. Ink covered his body, and his walnut-brown hair hung just below shoulder length. When he rode, he'd pull it back in a tail or a braid, but he enjoyed the freedom of it hanging loose most of the time.
Standing at the kitchen sink wearing well-worn jeans and a T-shirt molded to his muscular frame, Jagger took a long pull off the energy drink he used as his replacement for coffee. His deep brown eyes swept the room while he considered what his life had been like before the phone call and how it compared to now. Damn! He'd loved his job as a bounty hunter. He got to travel all around the country and kick the crap out of people—and get paid for it. Nothing gave Jagger more pleasure than taking down some thug or pervert who had eluded the cops—well, almost nothing. Sex topped the list, of course. But to have a career where he got to be his own boss, got to mix it up a little physically, and help clean the world of some of the scum that preyed on others—it worked as his damned dream job.
Then the call came about his dad.

Excerpt Four
Taking a deep breath, Shay simultaneously executed a quick reverse arch of his back, scissored his legs, and bent one knee, getting just enough flex so he could raise a hip and accomplish a roll under his attacker. The element of surprise had been on his side because the man on top of him hadn't expected a practiced move like that, much less the core strength Shay had carefully built and nurtured during all his long work-outs at the gym.
In that one quick motion, Shay had turned himself completely and got a clear view of person who had put him in this position.
Holy shit! He's a goddamned god! Shay's brain registered the surprising fact when he looked up into the most beautiful brown eyes he'd ever seen. The man had been taken off guard, but had recovered quickly enough to grab Shay's hands, pinning each to the ground next to his shoulders. That move brought the attacker's face into very close proximity to Shay's and allowed him to see the gold and black flecks in the chocolate brown eyes.
The man's hair hung like a curtain, partially obscuring his face and tickling Shay's. He gazed down with a look of fierceness that would have struck fear into most people, but the intensity of the man's glare went straight to Shay's cock. In a quick minute, his mind registered the well-defined musculature, the bad-boy ink, the slight sheen of sweat, and the deep, musky odor that emanated from the man above him.
Shay looked directly up into the piercing eyes and reacted in an instinctive and completely natural way.
He licked his lips, smiled gently, and offered, "Hey there, I'm Shay. Nice to meet you."

Excerpt Five
He didn't know why, but it suddenly mattered a great deal to him the man understood what had happened. They each seemed to be victims of a mix-up, with a dash of bad timing thrown in, and Shay didn't want his meeting with Jagger to end badly with him being tossed out the front door, especially after his intense reaction to the hunky bad-boy.
Much to Shay's surprise, Jagger broke the stare and looked down at the sofa cushion next to him, worrying a thread that had come undone. Shay hadn't noticed the furniture showed a little threadbare and worse for wear. The house certainly didn't look like a showplace and neither did Jagger's dad look to be well off.
After a minute or so, Jagger broke the silence. "I'm not lying to you, Shay. I don't know anything about the damn cable service, but my dad's just not that kind of guy—at least he never has been. Over the last few weeks since I've been here after the call about the accident, I'm noticing he doesn't seem to be doing so well financially. His pension must barely be making it. But even then, I can't imagine…" Jagger's voice died off.
He obviously didn't know what else to say. A piece of Shay's heart broke when he heard the pain, the fear, and the uncertainty in the strong man's voice.
Shay didn't think—he just reacted. In one motion he slid over next to Jagger and put his arms around him. The big man jolted slightly, as if the contact and the tenderness represented a strange and unfamiliar happening—but he didn't pull away. Rather, he rested his head on Shay's shoulder—being there, just breathing and being there, Shay decided. And that would be enough…

About Amie Nichols
AmieNichols
I live in Iowa with my amazing, supportive husband. He is my rock and my king, and treats me like all women should be treated. (Like a spoiled Queen.) I have two miniature dachshund's that are my babies, and they love to keep me company when I am writing away on my next WIP. I'm about to publish my 6th book, and can hardly believe how my life has changed. I'm called an author, and still can't believe it. I've have met some amazing women in my journey so far, and have learned so much. (Sometimes the hard way.) I've been like a sponge soaking up all the information I can on how the publishing world works. It's been a roller coaster ride so far with its ups and its downs. No matter what, I will never regret anything I've done. You can't succeed if you don't try, and if you don't try you won't succeed. One of my favorite quotes is, "If the dream is big enough the facts don't matter". Some other info about me: I love my family, friends, wine, and anything caffeinated. I also love writing HEA. For the same reason I won't watch a movie that I know will make me cry, (with the exception of Steel Magnolias) I will never write a book without an HEA. There might be a few twists and turns, a cliffhanger or two, but ultimately my stories will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. For me, reading is entertainment, a way to escape this crazy insane world. If a book leaves me feeling sad, mad or gut wrenched, it is not for me. There is enough gut-wrenching sadness in this world, I don't need to read about it too. I started writing 3 years ago, and have no plans on stopping. So keep your eye on me, because with the help of some amazing people, and my wonderful fans, this girl is going to be on the New York Times best selling list someday.

Review

I'm not able to put my full review up, as the first portion contains spoilers, so my review starts in the middle.
....what happens next is a whirlwind love affair that has you laughing, crying, raging, and sighing throughout the book. T.J. Tims captures your attention with intrigue, mystery, heartbreak, and laughter. At times I wanted to throw my tablet through the wall, while at other times I wanted to crawl through it and give both characters a big squeeze. There were a ton of “Oh shit, I didn’t see that coming!” moments. I mean seriously, I can’t tell you how many times I was totally shocked by the events that were happening. The passion between Luc and Gen was scorching hot and made me want to find my own significant other to relieve the pressure ;)
I feel I have to reiterate the laughter part. I seriously have never laughed so hard while reading a book! This was absolutely an all-of-a-sudden-you-bust-out-laughing-book. There were several times I got strange faces from my husband. It was a back-to-back laughter fest throughout the book! There were several times I had to put my tablet down because I was laughing so hard.
I have to mention the side characters in my review because, well, they played their part so well that they deserved to be mentioned. I won’t go into names but I will say that each and every side character holds a place in my heart, some more than others. They all complimented each other and brought even more life to the book, not to mention they were all hilarious! They are, in part, what makes this book so good. I so look forward to reading each and every one of their stories.
I’m going to close this review by saying there is no way that I gave this book the justice it deserves. I can not recommend this book enough. T.J. Tims created a beautiful world based on family and friendship. It was extremely hard to put it down and I was terribly sad that it ended. This book will forever be implanted on my favorite shelf. It is a definite must read for everyone! I give More Than I Asked For 5 astounding, hot, and hilarious stars!

 Excerpt

Getting to the edge of the dock, I jump down upon the boat’s deck, tossing the bag aside to get the get the motor started. When it’s on, I do nothing more than sit on the boat, engine now running, and feel the perspiration burst to life all over my body. Jace is nowhere in sight and as I hear glass shatter and my home be torn apart I start to wonder if I should go back.

But I remember his words and grip onto the side of the boat. The feeling of going to help him doesn’t diminish as I see flames burst to life. The kitchen going up almost immediately. I can’t stop the tears that prick to life and begin to fall and I result to dropping my head into my hands. I feel helpless and vulnerable and I’m caught in a chokehold between what I should do and what my gut is telling me to do.

“Joely!”

I look up and see Jace running towards me. I watch him run towards, just as windows blow out of the house. Out perfect home is now ablaze and my heart is in my throat. I’ve never  been happier to see him so unscathed and the look on his face tells me he’s happy to see me here like he ordered. Jumping onto the boat, he wastes no time putting  his hands either side of my face, inspecting me grazes and marks. He notices the stream of blood down my face and I see his eyes widen with panic.

“I tripped, but I’m okay,” I whisper gently, closing my eyes as his thumb traces over my temple below the cut.

“You’re okay?” he asks me as if not hearing my gentle sentence.

I nod. “I’m okay,” I repeat to him, smiling mirthlessly.

With that he nods his own head, calculating our freedom. “Okay,” he murmurs, and starts to look around the boat, the enormity of the moment catching up. Even though we’re hidden well out here, there’s still enough moonlight and light from the fire to make us visible.

“What took you so long?” I scold him. I’m relieved he’s here, but my heart couldn’t take the thought of him being hurt or worse while I
sat out here.

“I had to get to the safe. I had to get money for us to be able to get out of here,” he enlightens me, stowing a large wad of money into the bag I carry. “Right, we need to go.”

“Jace,” I start, putting my hand onto his to stop him for the moment. “What happened back there? How were we found?”

Even though he’s not looking at me while he unties us from the dock and pushes out into the bay, his words send my body into overdrive.

“Because Clara’s found us.”

Author Info

I used to be just another Fanfiction writer! That was until one person showed real interest in my work. And then another, and then another, until I had this whole group of people reviewing like crazy and wanting original work from me. I’d spent years writing for free online, I didn’t believe I had it in me to publish something!
But I’m glad I did!! I never imagined pushing my work and striving to reach my ultimate. I never imagined I’d be the girl who started The Viper Rooms! But who am I to deny the inspiration when it hits?
I love writing, it’s a lifeline. I love creating a world that others fall into. I love having the control to make a whole new world. It’s like a dependency, an addictive one. It’s one of the things I’m extremely proud of.
As much as I complain, I love the mini dialogues that go on in my head, the plotlines that attack me when I least expect them to. The ones that jump to life at the most inappropriate times and drive me totally crazy!!
For now I split my life between writing, dreaming, working, and volunteering with children.
